The Cost of Healthcare
Insurance companies do not impact the cost of healthcare in America.
The underlying cause of the cost of healthcare in America is the freedom of choice. One of the most important rights we have as humans… the power to choose. Each of us has the freedom to make choices without any limitation on the results of our choices.
When we choose to get drunk daily instead of enjoying one glass of wine… we have made a choice about the cost of healthcare. Smoking is legal… and we have the choice to smoke or not. But, if we choose to smoke we contribute to the cost of healthcare in America.
Devour a cheeseburger or a salad is a choice. Too much of one and we contribute to the cost of healthcare.
No one in American would want to have their right to choice taken away and told how they must live, but it is the responsibility of the individual to accept the outcome of their decisions.
When individuals abuse the use of emergency care at hospital instead of going to a physician for care, they impact the cost of healthcare in America. When people choose to ignore good health habits, they impact the cost of healthcare in America.
When the Government issues mandates on how to care for people, regardless of their poor decisions, the cost of healthcare in America increases.
Insurance companies do not employ the doctors who deliver the quality of care we enjoy in America. Insurance companies do not own the hospitals that have the latest technology to deliver exceptional care. For the most part each component of the healthcare system in America is a participating member of the private enterprise system. The insurance companies, the physicians, drug companies, and other healthcare vendors determine the “cost” to deliver the products and services based on demand and their cost to deliver to the patient.
The insurance companies negotiate with physicians, hospitals and drug companies to reduce their costs, so they can reduce the cost of providing coverage, which directly impacts the premiums they must charge. but the hospital offering lower cost to a specific insurance plan, must then make up for the reduction from other sources of income in order to maintain their office, staff and facilities.
But, the reality is that the entire healthcare infrastructure is based on demand and the personal choices made by each person who ultimately determines their lifestyle choices.
Personal freedom has a cost. And, it should continue to be a personal freedom. Remove personal responsibility and you forfeit the freedom of your neighbors.
